A quiet, global war is unfolding on the internet between two factions: those who strive to tick every checkmark box and those who prefer to make the boxes white. The battlefield is within the game called "one million checkboxes," created by Twitter user itseieio.
You open the site, which means you enter the battlefield, along with many others from all corners of the globe. The game rules are simple and straightforward: checking a box checks it for everyone. However, the game becomes less simple as other players continually alter the game state. After observing others' struggles, I couldn't resist joining and enjoyed creating a neat line of continuously checked boxes. Suddenly, my ticked boxes disappeared in the order they were created — someone must be stalking me and unticking my boxes.
The game allows you to jump to a certain checkbox by inputting any number from 1 to one million, to navigate to that specific box, or simply scroll down to escape the frontline. The battle may feel quieter there.
The constant toggling of the checkboxes reflects the intensity of the ongoing war, leading the developer to admit that the server was "under heavy load". The developer also revealed that about 500,000 players, perhaps more, are participating in the war. They thoughtfully proposed the possibility of introducing a single-player version where players can do as they want, free from the interference of pesky enemies.
If you're interested in joining the war, you can click here and follow the developer on Twitter for more information about this game.
