Own Your Body Horror In This Victorian-Inspired Eerie Metroidvainia

The team behind Venture to the Vile consists of seasoned developers with a background in creating some of the most beloved AAA titles such as GTA, Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and BioShock. Now, the fresh studio Cut to Bits is committed to making narrative-focused games that inspire thoughtfulness in the player, encouraging them to question the choices they make and the values they hold.

Drawing inspiration from titles like Hollow Knight, the developers introduced their debut project called Venture to the Vile, a 2.5D Metroidvania with a very distinct look, set in a quaint world with a town-wide curse called "the Vile". The hero's life is plunged into chaos by the arrival of the Vile leaving him hurt with a corrupted arm that can transform into a vicious claw. He has no choice but to set out to find his disappeared best friend Ella and investigate the sources of the outbreak, all the while encountering stories of other missing town folk and folklore legends.

The Vile is all-infesting and the protagonist will absorb its powers deeper and deeper with every blow he has to deal in a fight. The question is, will the hero save the town and Ella or will he become the exact monster he's fighting against?

There are a lot of animal themes throughout the game including hares, crows, and deer. Animal masks were the first masks put into use by ancient primitive humans, and this feels like a love letter to surrealistic stories and antique aesthetics, giving a real feeling of an old town filled with mystery and folklore lurking on every corner.

Here's what else you can expect in the game:

• Becoming the monster. Absorbing the Vile gives you more power but at what cost? As you take on more of the vile's characteristics you'll endure radical changes, becoming more powerful and more grotesque while also gaining stronger abilities.
• Rich story, a dark, dynamic world, and peculiar characters. Immerse yourself in a rich narrative oozing with charm and memorable characters. Get to know the many quirky and charismatic NPCs that dwell in the town of Rainybrook.

• Innovative puzzles. Unlike conventional 2D games where backgrounds simply serve as visuals, in Venture to the Vile you're invited to explore and uncover any area of the environment you can see and access.

Venture to the Vile is an action-packed platformer, where you can jump, swing, and fight your way through dangerous enemies. You'll have to unlock new abilities to overcome the Vile's curse, even if it means losing your humanity in the process, however.

The world of the game is so interactive that the time of day and weather conditions affect your gameplay experience, opening new quests, monsters, narratives, and unexpected upgrades to uncover. Seek out monsters and quests that only appear under specific conditions!

Venture to the Vile is set to launch on PC on May 7, followed by PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 release in late 2024. There's a downloadable demo on the game's Steam page to try it out.
