Perfect Dark Reboot Is Reportedly Several Years Away

The Perfect Dark reboot is making steady progress, although some difficulties appear to have slowed it down.

The planned Perfect Dark reboot, which was initially shown during The Game Awards in 2020, is supposedly still many years away from being released.

A recent IGN report has been published, revealing the FPS's development long process and the several difficulties that the developer has had to deal with. IGN claims that early disputes between The Initiative and its co-development partner, Certain Affinity, were the root cause of the game's issues.

In the report, it’s stated that both parties shared different visions and that senior developers ‘often clashed, causing tension on both sides and a general feeling of mistreatment’, which reportedly led to multiple prototypes of the game being scrapped.

The team eventually was able to put together a "fairly polished" proof of concept for Perfect Dark a few months after the project was announced at The Game Awards. This included "a handful of unfinished, prototype levels, a loose narrative, and showcased some basic traversal, gadgets, and combat." However, certain parties were not satisfied with the results. It was decided not to extend the co-development agreement with Certain Affinity.

Crystal Dynamics took up this place. However, this apparently came with its own set of difficulties as Crystal Dynamics discovered that the proof of concept was "a bit of a mess" and needed more assistance than initially anticipated. Despite the fact that Perfect Dark had already been in development for three years at the time, it had to be revised once more. However, all difficulties appear to have been overcome since the sources currently report that Perfect Dark is developing steadily under Crystal Dynamics.
