Studio Zero’s debut title, Metaphor: ReFantazio, is coming out in just three days. As a brand new original title created under the leadership of Katsura Hashino, the director behind several Persona games, the upcoming JRPG gathered a lot of attention and discussion when its 16-minute gameplay video was showcased at Gamescom earlier this year.
A highlight of the video is the stylish UI design of the game — it’s clear and dynamic and integrates with the gameplay perfectly so that players won’t feel interrupted when selecting equipment and skills during combats. Katsura Hashino told The Verge that the team takes "a lot of time" to achieve such outstanding UI design.
"In general, the way most game developers make UI is very simple. That’s what we try to do as well—we try to keep things simple, practical, and usable," Katsura Hashino said. He then continued to share how the team went beyond the basic goal and presented UI panels that are not only functional but also fancy.
"Maybe the reason that we’ve achieved both [functionality and beauty] is that we have unique designs that we make for each and every menu. This is actually really annoying to do. We have separate programs running for each of them as well. Whether it’s the shop menu or the main menu, when you open them up there’s a whole separate program running and a separate design that goes into making it. It takes a lot of time."
