Phil Spencer On How Much He Plays, His Favorite Band & Playing During Meetings

The Xbox head revealed that he sometimes plays games during work meetings, spoke about his favorite band, and shared what game he is currently playing.

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Microsoft Gaming's CEO Phil Spencer spoke about Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard saying that he "feels good" about how the deal is progressing. He also discussed the unions within his company and spoke about Microsoft's desire to reduce the friction caused by different platforms.

Along with some business issues, the Xbox head was also asked about his life, his personal preferences, and some curious facts from his biography. Here are some interesting facts that we've learned from the interview.

In the 1980s, Phil Spencer worked in a computer mart where he was selling and playing video games which caused him to "grow up his inner geek", as Spencer joked. Spencer shared that back then, he mostly played arcades and his favorite one was Robotron.

"Probably more in the 70s than the 80s, I remember my dad bringing a video game the Atari 2600 with the cartridges home and I was kind of at the beginning of it and I just kept playing and it's still with me," Spencer said.

The Xbox head also shared that now he is playing Cult of the Lamb, the recently-released rogue-like action-adventure game from indie developer Massive Monster. He also revealed that he has played games several times during meetings saying that it's easier to do this during online meetings where people can't see your screen and said that he was even once caught during this by the executive chairman and CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella.

Speaking of how much he usually spends playing games, Spencer shared that he plays roughly 15 hours a week and always goes to bed at 10 p.m. sharp with his friends constantly joking that the head of Xbox never allows himself to stay up longer.

When asked whether he is a fan of someone in the gaming industry, Spencer didn't reveal some specific preferences but noted that he loves to find a new game that he has never heard of, spend time with it, and then talk to the creators about it.

Spencer also shared that he is a big fan of punk rock and would love to see The Ramones perform at their prime.
