Phoenix Labs Lays Off 9% of Its Employees

Phoenix Labs' decision to concentrate on fewer development projects, including the forthcoming Fae Farm game, has resulted in laying off 9% of the studio's workforce.

According to a new report from GamesIndustry.biz, the developer of Dauntless, Phoenix Labs, confirmed that it underwent a round of layoffs last week.

The company's representative noted that Phoenix Labs recently had an evaluation of its ongoing development projects aimed to determine the company's "strongest path in terms of success and sustainability" and as a result of the assessment, it decided to focus on fewer development projects.

"This renewed focus offers the best opportunity for the success of Fae Farm and Dauntless, as well as the remaining unannounced titles in our portfolio," they said.

Phoenix Labs stated that it intended to find new assignments for as many employees as possible. However, while some employees were successfully reassigned, the company had to let go of some people in some cases. As per the company's statement, the layoffs affected approximately 9% of the company's total employees.

The job cuts occurred just a few months after securing backing to repurchase the company from their previous parent company Garena. The game development studio had been acquired by Garena in early 2020 and expanded by opening new offices in Montreal and Los Angeles later that same year.

As of now, Dauntless is the only game released by Phoenix Labs, but Fae Farm, exclusive to the Nintendo Switch, is expected to release later this year.
