Who needs the metaverse when we already have VRChat? The stuff players make for it is amazing, and here is one more treat: a world created by Tokoyoshi using photogrammetry, 3D Gaussian Splatting, and VRChat's light volumes.
3D Gaussian Splatting is a rendering technique that leverages 3D Gaussians to represent the scene, thus allowing one to synthesize 3D scenes out of 2D footage. Simply put, it takes samples of images and turns them into 3D scenes without creating meshes by converting a point cloud to Gaussians using machine learning. You can learn more about it here.
Tokoyoshi
The levels made this way look pretty realistic and, most importantly, don't require manual 3D modeling. However, the textures often look smudged and low-res due to the specifics of the technology. So while it's a cool way to make VRChat worlds, good quality needs many photos of the objects and quite some time to render with Gaussian Splatting.
