Pixar's Gatto Promo Image Is Reportedly Final Film Look, Not Concept Art
Pixar's Art Director Gastón Ugarte says Gatto uses a mix of 3D combined with hand-painted artwork.
Gatto
Gatto is an upcoming animated feature from Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios. It follows Nero, a black cat living in Venice who is indebted to a mob boss, and who forms an unexpected friendship with a street musician named Maya.
Beyond its logo and this promotional image, little official information has been revealed so far. However, in a recent video from the Argentine YouTube channel OLGA, additional details were shared by Gastón Ugarte, who appeared in the interview. According to him, Mark Ruffalo is set to voice the protagonist cat in the film. It was also revealed that the production uses a unique visual style, combining traditional 3D with hand-painting.
The art style aspect is particularly encouraging, especially given that both studios' own styles have started to feel somewhat stale in recent years. Animation is increasingly moving toward approaches that mimic hand-drawn aesthetics, and it's no exaggeration to say how influential Sony's Spider-Verse saga has been in that shift. Many recent animation successes like Arcane and KPop Demon Hunters also reflect this trend.
