Half-Life: Alyx received a warm welcome because it was a highly anticipated new title in the franchise and it offered to take a look at the game from a VR perspective. But if you don't have a headset, the NoVR mode from GB_2 Development Team is what you need, especially since its latest large update now allows you to play the entire game from start to finish and use Gravity Gloves and Combine Fabricators providing weapon upgrades.
Transferring hand gestures to keyboard and mouse controls is probably one of the most difficult tasks the team had, but it seems to be working with button presses. For example, Gravity Gloves can be activated by pressing E so you can grab any object from a distance and break wooden planks.
The mod is not yet finished, there is still work to be done, but you can enjoy the experience by downloading it from ModDB. It might not be better than (or the same as) the original VR version, but the mod allows many fans to finally play the game they might have been deprived of for three years.
