The company reported another milestone for PlayStation 5 and promised to significantly increase console production within the next six months.
Sony has revealed that PlayStation 5 shipments reached 20 million units worldwide and said that it plans to significantly increase console production within the coming month.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, SVP, Head of Global Sales and Business Operations at Sony Interactive Entertainment, Veronica Rogers has shared the latest sales numbers and said that the company is "planning on a significant ramp-up in PS5 production this year". She also added that Sony is "working endlessly to make sure that PlayStation 5 is available for everyone."
Previously, the company called the demand for PS5 "unprecedented" and reported that 80,000 PS5 units were sold in 82 minutes, while it took nine days to sell the same number of PS4 units over a comparable period. At the same time, PlayStation 4 managed to sell 20 million units in 15 months (471 days), while PlayStation 5 reached this milestone within 18 months (568 days) after its launch.
However, as noted by industry analyst Daniel Ahmad, PS5 was able to sell 10 million consoles faster than PS4. The sales slowed down when Sony faced a semiconductors shortage and, as a result, saw a decrease in supplies.
In May, Sony reported that PlayStation 5 sold 19.3 million units which means that the sales of the console fell short of its original target by 3.3 million units. Meanwhile, in the fiscal year 2022, the company expects to sell an ambitious number of 18 million units.
