PlayStation boss Jim Ryan claims that Microsoft's proposal to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation for three years beyond the current agreement fails to consider the impact on PlayStation gamers.
Following Microsoft's announcement that it is acquiring Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion, it's been widely discussed whether Activision's Call of Duty franchise will stay on rival platforms, in particular, on Sony's PlayStation.
The competition around Call of Duty was also among the factors which influenced the UK's Competition and Markets Authority's decision to extend its investigation, with the UK regulator stating that it was concerned that Microsoft could use its control of games like Call of Duty to hurt its competitors.
Earlier, Sony already expressed its concern that Microsoft might withdraw the Call of Duty series from PlayStation noting that no other product can be a competitor to Call of Duty and arguing that the franchise is so popular that it "influences users' console choice."
Last week, Microsoft commented on the matter noting that it is committed to keeping Call of Duty available on PlayStation for a little longer than it was initially planned saying that Xbox boss Phil Spencer made a commitment to PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan promising to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation for "several more years" beyond the existing deal.
Ryan recently responded to these comments. In a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, he shared that Microsoft promised to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation for three years beyond the current Activision and Sony agreement and noted that the offer was "inadequate on many levels."
The PlayStation boss believes that Microsoft's proposal "undermines" Sony's intent to "guarantee PlayStation gamers continue to have the highest quality Call of Duty experience."
"I hadn’t intended to comment on what I understood to be a private business discussion, but I feel the need to set the record straight because Phil Spencer brought this into the public forum," Ryan said.
"Microsoft has only offered for Call of Duty to remain on PlayStation for three years after the current agreement between Activision and Sony ends. After almost 20 years of Call of Duty on PlayStation, their proposal was inadequate on many levels and failed to take account of the impact on our gamers. "
