Portal 64 Developer Says That the Demake Was "Doomed" From the Beginning
"Don't be mad at Valve here."
As we reported earlier, the Portal 64 demake, as well as the Team Fortress: Source 2 fan project, was canceled after Valve's representatives contacted James Lambert, the developer behind the demake, and asked him to take it down.
In a recent video published by Lambert, he shared that the takedown was an expected thing to happen because it's Valve's intellectual property on the Nintendo console. Thus, people shouldn't be too upset about it, as it was bound to happen eventually.
"I don't blame them at all, and I don't think you should either. Don't be mad at Valve here. The project was probably doomed to be taken down from the beginning," Lambert said in a video.
Lambert used Libultra, the official Nintendo 64 SDK, to develop Portal 64, and it posed a problem for Valve's lawyers, according to Lambert. Although he considered switching to the open-source alternative libdragon, he hesitated due to the extensive work it would require. Well, despite this, Lambert says that he's "pretty happy" with how far he got with the project.
"I'm thinking I want to create an original game and develop it simultaneously for the Nintendo 64 and PC. So, that way it's an interesting project that runs on N64, but I also have a way to easily monetize that and have a wide audience of people who could buy it," he stated.
