Portal Writer Erik Wolpaw Would Like to Start Working on Portal 3
Co-writer of the Portal series, Erik Wolpaw, wants Valve to start developing the next Portal game before he got "too old to work" on it.
Erik Wolpaw, co-writer of the Portal series who also worked on the scripts for Half-Life 2: Episode One and Episode 2 as well as Half-Life: Alyx, expressed his desire to start working on Portal 3. During the recent Kiwi Talkz podcast, the writer said: "We’ve gotta start Portal 3. That’s my message to… to whoever."
Portal 2 was launched in 2011, and no follow-up games were released since then. Wolpaw also noted that he isn't "getting any younger" as well as members of the development team that originally worked on the series are getting to the point when it can be too late to work on the game, so the writer assumes it should be done as soon as possible.
Despite being enthusiastic about Portal 3, Wolpaw, however, acknowledged that it could be difficult to bring this idea to life. Earlier in the podcast, he said: "The problem is [Valve has] 300 employees, and I don’t know exactly the breakdown – how many of them are on the production side versus Steam business side versus legal versus whatever."

Wolpaw clarified that Valve's staff is always engaged in various projects, so it could be hard to just make them leave what they're currently working on. "They’re working all the time, it’s just you don’t always see the [result], it doesn’t always end up coming out, or it comes out years later, it gets turned into something else," he explained. "So everybody is accounted for, I guess is what I’m saying. People are all doing something."
The writer also noted that the high probability of payback for such a game is still unlikely to help push the company to develop Portal 3. "The problem is, you would make money, but what kind of money will you make? Are you gonna make Counter-Strike: GO money? Probably not," Wolpaw said. He then, however, appealed to Valve's president Gabe Newell saying that not every game needs to "make Counter-Strike: GO money".
