Prince of Persia The Sands of Time Remake is Still in "Conception" Stage

Ubisoft noted that the players "should not expect to hear more about the game this year".

Yesterday, Ubisoft shared a new blog post providing a much-needed update on the current state of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, a long-awaited remake of Ubisoft Montreal's 2003 action-adventure game, first announced in 2020, delayed multiple times, and even shifted from Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai to the Canadian department responsible for developing the original title.

While the blog post acknowledged that the project would not be showcased at Ubisoft Forward in June, it assured fans that the remake is still very much active. The post featured insights from Producer Jean-Francois Naud and Game Director Michael McIntyre, who disclosed that the project has undergone another reboot and is currently in the conceptual phase, nearly three years since its official announcement.

"In terms of the development stage, we're in conception right now," stated Jean-Francois Naud. "Since we took over the project, we've been looking at feedback from the community and finding our own way of delivering the game. Now, we're building up the team, defining the priorities, putting prototypes together, testing elements, and looking at how we can include community feedback in the development as well."

Additionally, the blog post mentioned that fans of the series should not anticipate any news or updates about the game in 2023, as the project is still in its early stages.

"It’s still in an early stage, and players should not expect to hear more about the game this year, but rest assured that we’re all putting our strengths and heart into this project," Naud added.

Additionally, Michael McIntyre provided an explanation for Ubisoft's decision to approach Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time as a remake instead of a remaster, stating that a remaster would not fully acknowledge the two decades of evolution that both the player base and the development team have undergone.

"It has been 20 years since the original game was released, and not only has technology advanced – which of course you would need for a remaster – but I think we, as players and game-makers, have evolved since that time," McIntyre commented. "I do not think a remaster would take enough of those evolutions into account. I think you need to do a remake in order to truly evolve the game to meet a modern context."
