Marcelo Souza showcased a realistic digital eye created with an unusual workflow.
Have a look at this incredible procedural dragon's eye created as an R&D project by Senior 3D Generalist and LookDev Artist at Tendril Studio Marcelo Souza, also known as Kumodot, using SideFX's Houdini and Maxon's Redshift.
According to Marcelo, the eye was created with an unusual workflow, consisting of building a procedural iris system and creating a custom system in Houdini for baking the VDB iris into a Depth Map and reapplying it on the eye mesh as Displacement to make the mesh less performance-taxing. Another Houdini-based system was then employed to generate tiny veins on the lid and membrane. The finishing touches were added using Redshift's Subsurface shader node to achieve the desired appearance for the eye.
