Procedural Legolizer in Houdini

We love when artists mix Houdini and Lego bricks.

Pascal Beeckmans, Environment Artist at Gameloft, has recently presented his awesome experiments with procedural structures in Houdini made of Lego bricks. The artist noted that any kind of Lego can be added to this setup, but it might result in slower output.

He also reported that some of the Lego pieces had a hard time finding a place in the volume grid, so they could be potentially removed to speed up the process.

Details:

  • Input mesh: Heightfield
  • 72.000 Legos / 56 official block types (17 plates).
  • Processing time: 12 minutes (32 cores).
  • Output: point cloud with orient, id, and color attributes.
  • Colors derived from the Heightfield data (103 colors, mixing actual and discontinued colors).
