The PS5 was also the top-selling console in the European markets surpassing Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S.
New GSD market data (via GamesIndustry.biz) reveals that console sales in Europe (excluding the UK and Germany) in January 2023 increased by 15.5% year-over-year due to a massive rise in sales of PlayStation 5 consoles.
Last January, the hardware sector was largely influenced by semiconductor shortages which also impacted the production and sales of PS5. However, since then, the supply chain has improved and Sony's console saw a rise in sales of a whopping 202% compared to last year.
The PlayStation 5 was also the top-selling console of the month surpassing the Nintendo Switch whose sales dropped by 11% from January 2022 and the Xbox Series X|S which saw a year-on-year decline in sales of 32%.
In terms of software sales, the number of games sold across the continent in January 2023 totaled 12.1 million representing a 19% decrease compared to the same period last year. The major reason for this decline is the absence of games comparable to Pokémon Legends: Arceus which was released last January and was a major success in terms of sales.
Such titles as Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 and franchises as FIFA and Call of Duty performed better in January this year compared to January 2022. Meanwhile, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe saw a significant decline in sales (down 37% from last year). However, it's worth noting that the GSD data only includes physical sales for Nintendo titles as the company doesn't disclose its digital figures.
Among the new games in the chart is the remake of Dead Space which sits at the No.6 position on the list of top-selling games in January 2023. The game was released nearly two months after The Callisto Protocol, a title that shares similarities with Dead Space and was developed by some of the original game's developers. In its first two weeks, The Callisto Protocol performed better than Dead Space which is especially impressive considering that GSD data doesn't include digital figures of the game.
