Real-Time Playback Of 5,000 Offset Characters Without Baking In Blender 4.5 Alpha

James Redmond put Jacques Lucke's PR to the test.

Motion Designer James Redmond, known as Redjam9, showcased a slightly surreal animation featuring characters moving in rhythmic unison, made possible by an upcoming Blender 4.5 feature developed by Jacques Lucke, a key contributor to many of the software's Geometry Nodes.

This pull request enabled James to improve his previous setup, allowing for real-time animation of 5,000 characters using procedural time offsets and a radial falloff without the need for baking. Earlier, he shared what he described as "a hack" that struggled to play back smoothly with more than 10 characters, which is why he had to rely on baking:

Jacques' patch for Blender introduces caching for imported geometries in Geometry Nodes, preventing reimports on each evaluation. The main benefits are automatic cache invalidation and a more general cache system that doesn't require knowledge of specific file types. Check it out here, and if you're interested in helping test Blender 4.5, currently in Alpha until June 4, you can download it by clicking this link.
