Redfall Developer Says the Game is Still a "Classic Arkane Experience"

The game's designer confirmed that Redfall's single-player mode is still a classic Arkane game with no bots around you.

Redfall, the upcoming open-world co-op shooter from Arkane Austin, has recently got a new gameplay trailer demonstrating both single-player and co-op action. Following the new demo, some fans of the studio got worried that drop-in, drop-out cooperative multiplayer mode might suggest the studio's departure from its DNA. However, the developer dispelled those doubts.

In a recent video interview with IGN, Harvey Smith, designer of Redfall confirmed that the game can be played alone from start to finish also noting that there will be no bots when you're playing alone.

The designer claimed that in single-player mode, Redfall is still a classic Arkane game which is "not a super hardcore" game where you have to rely on stealth, avoid open battles with a large number of enemies whenever possible, and constantly improvise.

"The single-player just goes through the campaign and there's no special mode for multiplayer or any of that," Smith said. "You can play with other people, one other person, two other people, three other people, for a total of four, but solo is very much a classic Arkane experience."

Smith also shared some additional gameplay mechanics. For instance, players can choose only one character for any given campaign, and in order to try out another character, they must start the campaign again.

In multiplayer mode, players can also use the same character during a co-op session. Smith assured that even in this case, people can have different roles in the team, skills, and weapons.

As in other online shooters, a player's level and equipment progression are persistent. However, the mission will be persistent, only if you're the host. This means that if you were hosting the session, you can continue the campaign from the moment where you finished, while other participants have to start from the beginning of the campaign.

The game takes place in the fictional town of Redfall in Massachusetts. According to Smith, the city in the game was originally too spacious and "too open", so they had to introduce restrictions in some places. However, the developer assured players that even after the changes, Redfall remains open and vertical in terms of gameplay.
