Communications Director at Remedy Entertainment decided to support fellow developers saying there are some challenges with the Xbox's less powerful console.
Larian Studios has not yet announced Baldur's Gate 3 for Xbox because they faced some challenges during the porting process. The studio noted the main problem is the lack of available memory on the Xbox Series S, which makes it difficult to play in the split-screen mode on the less powerful console.
Thomas Puha, Communications Director at Remedy Entertainment, commented on this situation saying he understands the challenges faced by Larian Studios with the Xbox Series S. Puha added that technical limitations need to be considered from the beginning of development. He went on to note that when developers start working on a game, they often don't want to think about these limitations.
In response to a Twitter user's question, Puha said that scaling games for Xbox Series X|S is not as straightforward as it is for PCs, which contributes to the difficulties. He did not provide further technical specifics.
Many went on to question how Baldur's Gate 3 will be released on the Steam Deck but not on the Series S. The thing is that the portable Valve PC has 16 GB of RAM, while the less powerful Microsoft console edition has 10 GB, with 2 GB partially reserved for the operating system.
In response to Puha's tweet, Michael Douse, the Publishing Director at Larian, sent an emoji with the image of two beer mugs. It appears the two understand each other.
Microsoft's policy obliges developers to release games on both consoles so they can't release the game just for one console. Previously, Sven Vincke, previously stated that they do not want to remove the split-screen mode on Xbox.
What's your take on the situation? Should Xbox allow some developers to prepare their games for just one of the consoles?
