Following surveys conducted between February and June 2023, the Syndicat National du Jeu Vidéo (SNJV) has published its annual report on the current state of the French game industry. The report provides valuable insights into the industry, thanks to the participation of 577 developers.
According to this new report, the number of game studios in France reporting annual sales above €10 million increased by 14.4% in 2022 compared to the previous year. In fact, over 12% of French studios reached this revenue threshold, with 8.3% surpassing €20 million. However, the majority of studios had lower annual revenues, with more than half of them earning below €300,000 in 2022.

In terms of industry composition, the French games industry consisted of 1,000 companies, including 577 game development studios. Notably, independent studios accounted for 39% of the industry. In 2022, 38% of studios self-published their games, marking a 9% decrease compared to 2020. The research highlighted that 85% of studios considered France an "attractive territory" for game development, with tax incentives being the most enticing factor according to 31% of respondents. The report also emphasized that other factors mentioned by respondents included the quality of education provided by educational institutions and the overall high quality of life in France.
The report also sheds light on job creation within the industry. It projected the creation of 400 to 600 game development jobs in 2023, with over 52% of companies planning to hire this year.
