The day has come.
Capcom has rolled out an update for Resident Evil 5, finally removing the Games for Windows – Live requirement after 14 years of it spoiling players' fun. GFWL was an online gaming service that effectively closed nearly a decade ago, so its support in RE5 was a headache for fans as they had to work around the errors it caused.
Interestingly, Capcom addressed the issue in 2017 by disabling the system notification that popped up with the GFWL error but left in the feature then as it "allowed previous GFWL users to import their old save game progress and Achievements into the Steam version."
Back to the latest patch, aside from the GFWL support discontinuation, Resident Evil 5 now supports local split-screen co-op on PC as well as consoles, which saw it much earlier. The patch also fixed some minor bugs.
The update for RE5 is a nice move on Capcom's part, considering the game turns 14 this year. It's great to see developers caring about their products so much time after launch.
