Riot Games' Enigmatic MMO Project is Still in the Works

While the studio "reset" the game in early 2024, the work continues behind the scenes.

It's been over a year since we've last heard about Riot Games' upcoming MMORPG set in the League of Legends universe – more than enough time in this day and age for many to completely forget the game has ever even existed – but according to Riot's recent job posting, work on the project is still continuing behind the scenes.

As a small reminder, the last proper update on the title came in early 2024, when Riot announced they had "reset" the MMO's development and would be "going dark for a long time – likely several years" to ensure the game brings something new to the genre and doesn't become just another run-of-the-mill MMORPG that would not only have to compete with larger, long-established players but also – to be completely honest – doesn't feel like something many gamers actually want and need.

While this explanation may sound like an over-elaborate, PR-approved way of saying "we don't want to develop the game, but canceling it outright would look bad, so we'll just postpone it until you all forget about it," this line of thinking turns out to be incorrect, as Riot's latest job opening shows the game is still in the works.

According to the listing, the studio is looking for a "Principal Level Designer on the MMO team" who will design or help design MMO levels and open-world or interior environments. Among the desired qualifications are experience with level design for open-world games or MMOs, extensive experience playing and ideally developing MMORPGs, and familiarity with the League of Legends IP, making it clear that the "Unpublished R&D Product" described in the vacancy and the LoL MMO are one and the same.

It's also worth noting that the position lists "significant proficiency (3+ years experience) with Unreal" as a bonus, suggesting the MMO might be powered by Epic's flagship game engine, the same engine used by Riot's first-person hero shooter Valorant.
