Roblox Adds Age Guidelines and Implements New Immersive Ads System

Roblox is adding age guidelines to the platform's games and bringing a new ads system that will allow creators to add 3D ads to their games using various interactive surfaces as well as create "portals" between games that will lead players to branded areas.

Roblox Corporation has introduced a few changes to its online game platform and game creation system Roblox. The company claims that as its main audience – who initially were children under 13 – is growing older, the platform is trying to grow up too. In order to adapt to the changes, Roblox is making efforts to become a platform suitable for all ages.

One of the key changes Roblox is planning to implement is adding age guidelines to Roblox games that are set to designate certain experiences as being suitable for different age groups. The company revealed that there will be three tiers in the games, similar to ratings that we know from the movie business. The first tier will include the age group from 13 years old and older, the second will be for 9 and up, and the third – will be the games suitable for all ages.

While children still make up the large share of Roblox users – only around 52% are players who are over 13 years old, according to Fortune – Roblox is seeing increasingly fast growth in users who are in the 17 through 24 year old group. So, the company is trying to provide this group with more content suitable for this age and even plans to bring Roblox experiences aimed at adults in the "far distant future."

Among the new additions to the platform will be a new immersive ads system. Currently, creators purchase banner ads using the in-game currency Robux. Besides, several high-profile brands, like Gucci and Spotify, have the ability to advertise their products by creating custom experiences.

Meanwhile, the new system will allow creators to add 3D ads to their own experiences using interactive billboards, posters, and other surfaces as well as get a cut of the ad revenue. Additionally, brands will be able to create "portals" between games that will lead players to a branded area, like a cafe or a store. Roblox said that it is planning to start testing this new ads system by the end of the year and launch it during the next year.

Other new additions that should soon appear in Roblox include new social features and updated avatars. Roblox Corporation says that avatars will have more facial expressions, like smiling and winking, and players will be able to chat with each other using those avatars, with their camera animating their avatars' expressions.
