The change was introduced almost a year after an advertising watchdog filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission regarding Roblox's advertising policies.
Roblox has announced new policy changes that will conceal ads from users aged 13 and below. This move comes almost a year after Truth in Advertising (TINA) filed a complaint with the FTC and released a report concerning Roblox's advertising approach toward minors.
At the time, in its complaint, TINA alleged that the online gaming platform deceptively displayed ads to millions of users, including a significant number of children and teenagers, and criticized Roblox for not having sufficient measures in place to ensure that advertising on their platform complies with truth in advertising laws.
The organization also noted that six months later, despite announcing that "users under the age of 13 will no longer be eligible to see ads", Roblox still had not sufficiently changed its advertising standards which is why TINA notified the FTC again.
"Despite Roblox’s public statements to the contrary, children on Roblox are not blocked from all advertising material; they are only blocked from advertisements by 3 marketers who have responsibly selected an older age range to correspond with their advergames," the organization stated in the newer complaint.
Now, Roblox has revealed its new advertising policy that involves hiding ads from users who are 13 years old or younger. The changes include a ban on several types of ads. Specifically, the platform will no longer allow ads that solicit charitable donations, promote multi-level marketing companies or their products, advertise financial services like tax preparation or credit monitoring, or promote cryptocurrencies and NFTs.
Apart from this, Roblox has also issued guidelines to developers on how they can comply with the platform's revised advertising standards.
