Rockstar Supported GTA Role-Playing Servers But Banned the Use of NFTs

The company said that it sees GTA role-playing servers as a form of expressing fans' creativity but prohibited the use of NFTs, misusing Rockstar's IP, and making new missions or maps in such projects.

GTA role-playing servers have been popular with the game's fans for quite some time now as they allow players to spawn into a map as a regular citizen who has a job like a cop, shop clerk, or even criminal, immersing themselves into the thematically fit worlds thanks to the installation of a mod.

However, such servers increasingly started to become hubs for the sale of various stuff like in-game items, licensed music, or loot boxes – the things that Rockstar would prefer not to be sold within their game.

The studio has recently addressed the topic of GTA role-playing servers. In a new statement on Rockstar's support page, the company said that it believes that role-playing servers are an example of fan creativity which it strongly supports.

"Rockstar Games has always believed in reasonable fan creativity and wants creators to showcase their passion for our games," the company wrote. "Third party 'Roleplay' servers are an extension of the rich array of community-created experiences within Grand Theft Auto that we hope will continue to thrive in a safe and friendly way for many years to come."

At the same time, however, Rockstar introduced a set of new rules that should be applied to such servers. The studio listed things such as the sale of loot boxes, using cryptocurrencies and NFTs, importing real brands, and misusing the studio's IP as actions that will not be allowed. It also prohibited the use of role-playing servers as a way to create new games, stories, missions, and maps in GTA V.

In other words, the developers implemented rules that do not allow any commercial activity on GTA role-playing servers. Rockstar noted that its statement should not be used as an endorsement of any third-party project and added that the GTA publisher Take-Two reserves the right to revise or even withdraw the published statement.

Rockstar is not the first company that prohibited the use of NFTs around its projects. Back in July, Minecraft developer Mojang also banned any NFT integrations in the game's client and server applications.
