As spotted on the r/Ryujinx subreddit by XeClutch, Nintendo of America seems to have officially taken ownership of Ryujinx's old domain, the popular open-source Nintendo Switch emulator for PC that was shut down last month.
In early October, the Ryujinx team revealed that Nintendo had contacted the emulator's creator, gdkchan, and "offered an agreement to stop working on the project, remove the organization and all related assets he's in control of." Shortly after, downloads and GitHub repositories were taken down.
It's unclear when exactly Nintendo took ownership of ryujinx.org, but the site is no longer functional. Surprisingly, it doesn't redirect to Nintendo's official website.
Unfortunately, this isn't the first time Nintendo has acquired the rights to stop the distribution of something. As users pointed out in the same Reddit post, Nintendo even went so far as to acquire the rights to a pornographic parody of Super Mario in the past. According to WHOIS database information, the former domain of the other popular Switch emulator, Yuzu, which was targeted earlier and required to pay a penalty, now belongs to Nintendo of America as well:
The major Nintendo Switch emulators appear to have no future, as Nintendo is likely to maintain its control over it in all forms. As the Switch era nears its end, it will be interesting to see how Nintendo's strategy against emulation develops in the coming years.
