Scarlett Johansson, a Hollywood celebrity most famous for her character Natasha Romanoff in the MCU, has filed a lawsuit against an AI app developer for unauthorized use of her name and likeness in an online advertisement. The initial report by Variety reveals that the advertisement was for an AI image editing tool called "Lisa AI: 90s Yearbook & Avatar," prominently featuring an AI-generated version of Johansson's voice.
The 22-second ad starts by giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look at Johansson filming her role in "Black Widow," where she says: "What's up, guys? It's Scarlett, and I want you to come with me." However, the ad takes a surprising turn as it shifts away from Johansson and an AI-generated voice attempts to mimic her, stating: "It's not limited to avatars only. You can also create images with text and even your AI videos. I think you shouldn't miss it."
At the end of the advertisement, Convert Software, the developer of the app, includes a disclaimer stating: "Images produced by Lisa AI. It has nothing to do with this person." Representatives for Johansson clarify that she has never used the app. Her attorney, Kevin Yorn, confirms that legal action is being pursued to address the matter.
Yorn emphasizes the seriousness of the situation, stating: "We do not take these matters lightly. Per our standard protocol in such situations, we will pursue all available legal remedies." Many US states, including California, have strict laws safeguarding the right to privacy, particularly concerning the unauthorized use of a person's "name, voice, signature, photograph, or likeness" for advertising or promotional purposes. While some celebrities may file lawsuits to establish legal precedents, most cases are resolved through cease and desist orders.
