See How Training 3D Gaussian Splats Special Way Can Create Eerie Images

He's looking right inside.

Portraits following you with their eyes is a creepy scene from horror games, but you can make your own with 3D Gaussian splats. As audiovisual artist Gnomalab demonstrated, the same effect can be achieved by training splats on photos of a person looking into the camera.

Whichever way you turn the 3D model, he always looks right at you – an eerie but cool experiment produced on PlayCanvas, an open-source web graphics platform. You can have fun with the project yourself.

3D Gaussian Splatting is a fun technology that has been rapidly improving in recent years. Masaki Mizuno, for example, explored its capabilities with a mesmerizing dance made from afterimage effects.

Stay tuned for more splat magic and don't forget to subscribe to our Newsletter and join our 80 Level Talent platform, follow us on TwitterLinkedInTelegram, and Instagram, where we share breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.
