Rovio and Sega have both confirmed that they are currently in discussions concerning the possible acquisition of the Angry Birds developer.
Rovio Entertainment, the developer of the popular mobile game Angry Birds, has confirmed that it is currently in discussions with Sega Sammy Holdings regarding a potential acquisition.
Rovio disclosed that it was engaged in numerous discussions with different companies interested in acquiring the studio in February, including Israeli mobile firm Playtika, which was negotiating an $800 million acquisition. However, those discussions with Playtika came to a halt last month.
On Saturday, the Angry Birds developer issued a statement confirming that it is presently in talks with Sega.
"As part of its strategic review, Rovio Entertainment Corporation confirms that it is in discussions with Sega Sammy Holdings Inc," the company said. "Rovio and Sega will release further information at an appropriate time."
The statement came after the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that Sega is on the verge of purchasing Rovio for approximately $1 billion. Rovio refrained from commenting on the reported valuation, and instead noted in the statement that there "is no certainty as to when the possible tender offer would take place, or whether it would take place at all".
Sega has also confirmed that it is considering the acquisition of Rovio. The company's board is scheduled to discuss the matter today, April 17.
"The Wall Street Journal and some other media outlets have reported that SEGA SAMMY HOLDINGS INC. is nearing an agreement to acquire Rovio Entertainment Oyj, but this was not announced by our group," the company wrote.
"No formal decision has been made in this regard at this time, while it is true that we are considering such strategic option," the statement continues. "This topic will be discussed by our board of directors today, April 17, 2023, and we will announce in a timely manner when any decisions are made concerning this strategic option."
