Sega Is Working on Movies Based on Space Channel 5 and Comix Zone

Sega has partnered with Picturesart to develop the film adaptations of its classic games.

Following the success of Sonic the Hedgehog movies, Sega has unveiled its decision to create two more film adaptations based on the titles from its catalog.

On Saturday, Sega announced that it has partnered with the media company Picturestart – together the companies will develop the film adaptations of classic video games Space Channel 5 and Comix Zone.

Space Channel 5 is a 1999's music video game developed by United Game Artists. It was originally released for the Dreamcast and later ported to PlayStation 2 and the Game Boy Advanced. In late 2020, the title also got a VR version called Space Channel 5 VR Kinda Funky News Flash!. In the game, players take control of the space-faring reporter Ulala who investigates an alien invasion and battles villains in rhythm-based combat mimicking the actions of rivals in time to musical tracks.

According to Sega, Space Channel 5 will be a crime comedy that will follow the story of a fast-food employee who was recruited by a freedom reporter from the future to stop the aliens from ending the world "using the one thing that unites all people on the planet: our love of silly viral dances."

The film will be written by Barry Battles, the writer behind The Baytown Outlaws and the short film Far Cry 5: Inside Eden's Gate, and Nir Paniry who wrote the script for the 2012's sci-fi film Extracted. The main roles in the film will be played by Billy Bob Thornton and Eva Longoria. Original Space Channel 5 game design director and writer Takumi Yoshinaga is also participating in the film adaptation.

The classic game that is getting a film adaptation is Comix Zone, a 1995's beat 'em up game for the Genesis. The movie will tell the story of a comic book creator and a young, queer writer of color who were sucked into a comic book and had to work together to fight a dangerous supervillain.

Comix Zone will be written by Mae Catt who is credited for a number of TV series based on Transformers, Spider-Man, and Young Justice.

Sega's Toru Nakahara, who produced Sonic the Hedgehog movies and Sonic Prime TV series, will serve as a producer for both adaptations.
