On October 17, it was announced that Harebrained Schemes (HBS), renowned for their titles such as Shadowrun trilogy, BATTLETECH, and The Lamplighters League, will be parting ways with Paradox Interactive.
As stated on the official website of Paradox Interactive, the separation between HBS and Paradox is the outcome of a mutual agreement, driven by their respective strategic and creative priorities. Paradox will maintain ownership of The Lamplighters League and other titles developed by HBS. Meanwhile, Harebrained Schemes will actively explore new opportunities for publishing, partnerships, and investments. They'll officially split up on January 1, 2024.

Following the release of a tactical strategy game centered around misfits, the management of the publisher and studio employees engaged in discussions regarding their future collaboration. However, Paradox ultimately determined that including similar genre games would not align with its existing portfolio.
"We and HBS' leadership have been discussing what would happen after the release of The Lamplighters League, but a new project or sequel in the same genre was not in line with our portfolio plans. Hence, we believe that a separation would be the best way forward. We're very happy that this talented, gifted studio has the chance to continue, and can't wait to see what they will make next," said Charlotta Nilsson, the COO of Paradox.
In response, Harebrained Schemes expressed their commitment to supporting The Lamplighters League until the end of the year. Simultaneously, they will actively pursue funding and partnerships to establish an independent future starting in 2024.
"Our studio mission remains the same: to make games that challenge your mind and touch your heart," added Brian Poel, the Studio Operations Manager of HBS.
