SEGA
Why think about what the most influential video game is if you can leave it in the hands of gamers? That's what BAFTA did this year by starting a public poll, asking players to vote for what they think changed the industry the most.
The vote decided that SEGA's action-adventure game Shenmue (1999) was the most influential. The organization noted that it opened Pandora's box of open-world gameplay and popularized the use of Quick Time Events (QTEs).
"With its introduction of dynamic day-night and weather cycles and non-playable characters (NPCs) with seemingly unique routines, it immersed players in a living, reactive world that offered a fully realised open world experience. It was this depth of world simulation and NPC interaction that captured its passionate fanbase and saw it expand into a franchise spanning multiple platforms."
Many players question the choice, especially considering the games that come after Shenmue in the poll. We have DOOM, Super Mario Bros., Half-Life, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Minecraft following the winner, which all seem reasonable until you see who took the 7th place.
Apparently, a couple of months is enough for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 to get influence in the industry, at least according to gamers. I mean, it's a great game, don't get me wrong, but I don't think it's enough to make it influential. As it usually is, it looks like some people took this opportunity to simply vote for their favorite recent games.
