Sledgehammer Was Once Working on an Uncharted-Inspired Third-Person Call of Duty Game

Former Sledgehammer senior creative director Bret Robbins has shared that the studio was once developing a third-person Call of Duty game that blended Uncharted and Call of Duty elements.

During a recent interview, former Sledgehammer Games senior creative director Bret Robbins revealed that the studio was once developing a third-person Call of Duty game that took inspiration from Uncharted.

Speaking to MinnMax's Ben Hanson, Robbins shared that shortly after Sledgehammer was founded, the team had been working on a third-person game that blended Uncharted and Call of Duty elements. According to him, the game was aimed to provide players with a "pretty gritty" and "brutal war experience."

Robbins stated that the development team had created a prototype and demo for the project. However, the studio did not progress far with the project, as it did not even outline the entire game. Ultimately, it was just an experiment that was abandoned as the studio shifted its focus to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Sledgehammer Games is an American game development company that has contributed to the development of various Call of Duty projects such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Call of Duty: WWII, and more. It was established in 2009 by Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey, who previously worked at Visceral Games, the creator of Dead Space.

In February 2018, both Schofield and Condrey departed from Sledgehammer. They continued working with Activision until Condrey moved on to launch a career with 2K Games' 31st Union in the Bay Area in December 2018. Schofield also left the company to establish his own studio, Striking Distance, which released The Callisto Protocol in 2022.
