Someone Ran the Best GTA Game in VR and It Looks Awesome

Rames VR reacted to Meta's cancellation of San Andreas VR in the most productive way possible.

Around a month ago, Meta delivered disappointing news to fans of the Grand Theft Auto series, revealing that the much-anticipated VR version of GTA: San Andreas had been put "on hold indefinitely" – a statement many interpreted as a corporate way of saying that the project had been canceled without actually uttering the word "canceled".

Rames VR, a talented developer and virtual reality evangelist, has seemingly reacted to the news in the most productive way possible, tackling the challenge of running the best GTA game in VR on his lonesome. Guided by the principle, "if you want something done right, do it yourself," Rames employed a combination of mods and the remastered version of the iconic game to successfully reimagine it as a 6DoF virtual reality experience.

While the original San Andreas is, of course, not powered by Unreal Engine, the game's infamous 2021 Trilogy remaster is, which allowed the developer to easily enhance the game's immersion tenfold using praydog's UEVR, a renowned framework that essentially lets you turn any UE-powered video game into VR.

At the moment, Rames' project is still WIP and experiences occasional crashes and bugs, however, once the developer resolves these issues, he plans to release a detailed tutorial explaining how he created his fan-made SAVR. As such, we highly encourage you to follow Rames VR on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube to stay updated on future developments.
