Sony and Polyphony Digital Announce a Breakthrough Project in AI

Sony AI showed a sneak peek of a mysterious AI project it is working on with Sony Interactive Entertainment and Polyphony Digital – Gran Turismo developers.

Sony AI released a teaser of an upcoming project made in collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment and Polyphony Digital, which developed Gran Turismo. There is not much information about what exactly the project is going to be, but Sony promises it will be a "breakthrough".

The teaser leaves a lot to the imagination as it only shows some locations, a car engine, and esports players. Meanwhile, Gran Turismo Twitter cryptically says "change the game," whatever it might mean.

Sony AI was established in April 2020 "to pursue groundbreaking research in AI and robotics in the realm of entertainment." Its goal is to "unleash human imagination and creativity with AI."

What might give you an idea about the "breakthrough project" is Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida, who said last year, "By leveraging reinforcement learning, we are developing Game AI Agents that can be a player’s in-game opponent or collaboration partner." That year, Sony AI collaborated with PlayStation, now – with another game development company. So far, we can only guess what such alliances will bring to gaming.
