This move might indicate a potential sequel.
Sony has successfully patented a collaborative path-building mechanic similar to the one found in Death Stranding. The patent, initially submitted back in 2019, was granted on December 7 and lists Hideo Kojima as the inventor. The particular mechanic that was patented is described as "Terrain radar and gradual building of a route in a virtual environment of a video game" which is very similar to the one we can see in Death Stranding. The game's name, however, is not mentioned.
The patent also describes different ways of “influencing a gaming world of a video game" such as who created the paths, how used they are, and how they can be improved.
This somewhat questionable move might indicate the potential sequel to the Sony exclusive Death Stranding. There are rumors surrounding the continuation of the game, and even Norman Reedus himself confirms that a second Death Stranding is in negotiations.
