Sony Sells 40 Million PlayStation 5 Consoles

That's 10 more million copies since December 2022.

At the beginning of this year, we reported that the PlayStation 5 sales have surpassed 30 million units worldwide as of December 2022. The number was revealed by Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan.

When they shared the news, Sony noted that in December the PS5 sales hit a record since the console's release and added that PS5 shortages had become a thing of the past meaning that it had become easier to get a console and start playing God of War of Spider-Man.

What's up the number in July? Sony reports that they reached the milestone of 40 million PS5 consoles sold since launch. The company thanked their community and shared a couple of extra facts.

"We launched PlayStation 5 in November 2020 and the world was in a strange and different place than when we announced the console in 2019. Despite the unprecedented challenges of COVID, our teams and our partners worked diligently to deliver PS5 on time," wrote the team. "We continued to face headwinds with the pandemic, and it took months for supply chains to normalize so we could have the inventory to keep up with demand. For more months than I care to remember, we kept thanking our community for their patience while working through these issues. But now PS5 supply is well-stocked and we are seeing that pent-up demand finally being met."

A couple of other facts? 40 million means that Sony sold 10 million since December. It took the PS4 console 30 months and 6 days to sell 40m units, while the newer version needed 32 months and 15 days.

When do you think they'll reach 50 million? Should we expect such news by the end of 2023? You can find the original message here.
