Southeast Asia's Game Market Is Set to Reach $82 Billion in 2022

Southeast Asia's game market is set to reach $82 billion this year, which will represent 55% of the global game market.

Niko Partners together with gamescom asia have released a new report covering several insights into Southeast Asia's game market. According to the report, the total mobile and PC game revenue in Asia is set to reach $82 billion in 2022 which accounts for 55% of the global revenue, with the number of gamers in the region reaching at least 1.47 billion.

The analysts also state that the major part of the revenue comes from China, Japan, and South Korea, while the six major countries in Southeast Asia – Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam – represent only 6% of the region's revenue and 19% of the region's gamers.

The report reads that Southeast Asia is currently one of the fastest-growing game markets in the world – its compound annual growth rate (CAGR) reaches 8.6% between 2020-2025. The analysts believe that due to the support of the young populace and swiftly rising economies as well as upgraded infrastructure, this region "provides promising ground for the games market to continue to thrive."

Speaking of esports in the region, Niko Partners revealed that it is an important segment in Southeast Asia's games market, with the region having over 200 million esports viewers and gamers. The research conducted by the firm reveals that 60% of the region’s gamers are strongly drawn to esports and 42% of gamers in Southeast Asia fall into the segment of competitive arena gamers who love esports and other competitive games.

The report also notes that Southeast Asia's gaming audience is gradually becoming more and more diverse and though male gamers still outnumber female ones, this gap is quickly narrowing. Female players make up about 40% of all gamers in the region, and in key markets, like Indonesia and Singapore, this gap is much smaller with women comprising nearly half of the total gaming audience. In addition, the share of male and female players of mobile games is nearly identical. However, in segments like PC and console gaming, there is still some gap to overcome.
