devmar, an indie game developer and YouTuber who specializes in all things Godot, has recently posted a couple of demos highlighting a clever setup for spawning cracks in the ice developed for a WIP winter-themed horror game.
Powered by Godot, this method utilizes a crack-shaped mask and doesn't interfere with the surface ice mesh, enabling the developer to seamlessly incorporate and reposition openings in the ice. According to the author, the setup was created to allow the game's "subglacial evil" to emerge randomly at different locations.
The developer went a step further in enhancing the game's ice cracks by introducing an edge fade to the stencil mask shader, resulting in an appealing overfrost effect that creates the illusion that the crack is freezing back over:
And here are a couple of awesome first-person demos shared by devmar that showcase how the game looks so far:
Apart from the winter-themed horror game, the developer is also involved in creating a third-person horror title that boasts a diverse range of grotesque monsters and striking desolate landscapes. You can learn more about devmar's upcoming games by visiting the creator's Twitter page.
