Nintendo's cartoony third-person shooter Splatoon 3 was the best-selling game at Japanese retail in September. According to the latest Famitsu charts (via GamesIndustry.biz), the game managed to sell over 2.7 million physical copies last month, following its September 9 release.
Nintendo also recently revealed that domestic sales of Splatoon 3 for the Nintendo Switch surpassed 3.45 million in just three days after its launch, marking a record for any Nintendo Switch software within the first three days. The title also managed to hold the first position in the UK's retail charts for three weeks in a row shifting to the No.2 place with the release of FIFA 23.
In terms of physical sales, Splatoon 3 outperformed even the country's next biggest release, Dragon Quest X: Rise of the Five Tribes Offline, even if you count the sales of the game's versions for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PS5 versions combined – all three versions made it to the top-10 list taking No.2, No.3, and No.7 places respectively.
As for the rest of the top 5, Nintendo's Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Nintendo Switch Sports took the fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
In total, 3.9 million boxed games were sold in Japan in September, which means that Splatoon 3 sales made up 69% of all physical sales during that month. Nintendo games accounted for over 3 million making September the seventh month in a row when Nintendo tops the list of the best-selling publishers.
