Sponza Scene Remaster for Unity Is Now Available

The new version offers PBR-compliant textures and materials, physical lighting, and compatibility with High Definition, Universal, and Built-in Render Pipelines.

The Atrium Sponza Palace scene is used by graphics developers and artists for rendering and global illumination testing, but it was created back in the 2000s and has been outdated. Thankfully, there is now a new version that is caught up with modern real-time rendering.

Unity's Technical Artist Kristijonas Jalnionis has presented the updated Sponza, with multiple improvements. They converted all of the materials to comply with PBR standards and made sure it is compatible with HDRP, URP, and Built-in Render Pipeline. The creator notes that the HDRP version is the most complete in terms of graphical features.

As a result of the upgrades, the environment supports physically-based lighting and exposure, with PBR-compliant materials allowing for physically correct shading.

The remastered Classic Sponza was created with Progressive Lightmapper in mind, according to Jalnionis, so all lightmapped objects have custom lightmap UVs, making the scene look more realistic.

The environment is available for free on GitHub. Read more about the project here and don't forget to join our 80 Level Talent platform and our Telegram channel, follow us on Instagram and Twitter, where we share breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.
