Square Enix Montréal Is Rebranding to Onoma

The studio said that its new brand identity will serve as "an umbrella to multiple products, programs, and initiatives."

Following its acquisition by Embracer Group, Square Enix Montréal announced that it has been rebranded as Onoma. The studio said that its new brand identity will "serve as an umbrella to multiple products, programs, and initiatives, each with distinct personalities."

The company shared that shortly after the acquisition it created a "Rebrand Squad" that was tasked with "an in-depth audit of [the company's] existing branding and a competitive landscape analysis" and explained that it was important for the studio to create a name that would be easy to pronounce both in English and French.

According to the studio, Onoma, the name that the Rebrand Squad eventually came up with following the analysis and the results of the focus groups, reflects the "right brand story and identity" of the company. The company shared that "Onoma" means "name" in Greek and, as the studio explained, "names breathe life into objects, persons, or concepts; bring them to the world – real or imagined."

"Names are the beginning of stories – of our story as individuals and as a community," the company wrote on its new website. "Stories are invitations to other worlds where the unknown, the impossible, and the magical become reality."

Embracer Group first announced its plans to acquire Square Enix Montréal along with Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal for $300 million in May 2022. As a part of the deal, the Swedish holding also got rights to a "catalogue of IPs including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, Legacy of Kain and more than 50 back-catalogue games from Square Enix Holdings."

The deal was finalized in August when Embracer revealed that Square Enix Montréal, Crystal Dynamics, and Eidos-Montréal would form a new operating group.

Prior to the completion of the deal, Embracer also announced that it has made a new round of acquisitions including Middle-earth Enterprises along with rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit creative IP. The holding also purchased such companies as Limited Run Games, Tuxedo Labs, Tatsujin, and more.
