Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda To Step Down in June

The company explained that Matsuda's departure is motivated by the "rapid change of business environment surrounding the entertainment industry."

Square Enix has revealed that Yosuke Matsuda, the current president and representative director of the company, will be stepping down from his position and will be succeeded by the current company director Takashi Kiryu.

According to Square Enix, Matsuda's departure is motivated by the "rapid change of business environment surrounding the entertainment industry." The proposed change is aimed at restructuring the management team to better adapt to "ever-evolving technological innovations and maximize on the creativity" of Square Enix.

The change is expected to be officially finalized after receiving approval at the 34th Annual Shareholders' Meeting in June, followed by a meeting of the Board of Directors.

Yosuke Matsuda has held the position of president at Square Enix Corporation since April 2013 and, since June of the same year, has also served as the president of Square Enix Holdings, succeeding former president Yoichi Wada.

Under Matsuda's leadership, Square Enix made a significant push into blockchain investment. Despite the recent decline and waning interest in NFTs, he remained steadfast in his vision for Square Enix to pursue this direction, confirming Square Enix's intention to continue focusing on blockchain games in 2023 in his annual new year's letter.

Although the exact reason for Matsuda's departure is currently unknown, his strong advocacy for NFTs may have played a role in the company's decision to replace him with Kiryu.
