Star Citizen Has Reached $900 Million in Crowdfunding
6 million people deemed the game, in development for over a decade, worthy of their money.
Cloud Imperium Games
Star Citizen is one of the highest-funded crowdfunding projects, and even after 13 years of development, people keep bringing the developers their money. In fact, a whopping 6 million players added to the money pool, making the game reach $900 million in funding.
If you've heard Star Citizen being called controversial, it's because, after all these years and money, the game is still not fully out, and some consider it a scam, although players received the early access version in 2017, so it's not that the developers are just taking people's hard-earned bucks and running away with them.
Over time, the universe has even managed to split, with Cloud Imperium Games announcing Squadron 42, a single-player title in the same universe.
The studio is not that simple, though: it was called a "highly toxic company" by former producer Annie Bouffard and was criticized for its pay-to-win approach by players. This, of course, doesn't make fans more confident about Cloud Imperium Games' intentions toward their funds.
For now, Star Citizen still doesn't have a release date, but its creator, Chris Roberts, suggested it would be launched in 2027 or 2028.
