Starfield Dev Shared Why He Left Bethesda and Started His Own Project

"I always loved indie games and I figured, if I didn't do it now, I maybe never would."

Nate Purkeypile, the former lead Artist at Bethesda who worked on Skyrim, Fallout 3/4/76, Starfield, Metroid Prime 3, and BloodRayne 2 and created Diamond City, Blackreach, and Little Lamplight, shared why he decided to quit his job at the company and introduced his new title.

Purkeypile left Bethesda in 2021 when Starfield was in development. "I enjoyed working at Bethesda a lot when we were about 65-110 people on Fallout 3 and Skyrim, I enjoyed it a lot less as it grew and grew," the artist shared. He explained that the creation of Starfield involved about 500 people without outsourcing and four different companies (BGS, BGS Austin, BGS Dalls, and BGS Montreal). "This just wasn't my style. There were so many meetings and it wasn't the way I liked to build games. I like being able to just move fast and build unique things," Purkeypile said.

Just Purkey Games

The developer decided to move to creating his own project: "I always loved indie games and I figured, if I didn't do it now, I maybe never would." Nate Purkeypile has been developing his own game The Axis Unseen, a horror heavy metal game inspired by ancient folklore, which was announced in 2021 and now has a demo. "It's all about exploring an open world hunting monsters from folklore. Instead of having scary violins for the music, I wanted something with heavy metal," Purkeypile explained.

The release of Axis Unseen is scheduled for October 22, and now there's a demo that you can try.
