Previously, we reported that Starfield scheduled a dev Q&A session on Discord where the team planned to answer questions from the community. On August 16, Starfield's Design Director, Emil Pagliarulo, and Lead Quest Designer, Will Shen, held the session so we've decided to collect some curious facts about the upcoming space RPG shared at the event.
First, the team emphasized that the new game doesn't require prior experience with Bethesda's RPGs. The team also added that players can progress through Starfield at their own pace and in any preferred manner, without any restrictions. The studio thinks they have a strong role-playing foundation and a flexible character customization system. For example, you can become a friendly space trucker who will do whatever it takes to defend himself

If you're a fan of comfort, you can buy houses in all major cities – some properties can even be obtained as rewards for completing quests. Similar to other Bethesda games, Starfield has a fixed economy, but the prices of goods may vary depending on the character's skills. The game will give players the ability to become space pirates and smuggle contraband past security ships in orbit around planets. To do that, players can use special ship modules that will hide illegal cargo.
If you played Skyrim, you know that if you commit a crime and get noticed, you have to pay a fine or go to jail – Starfield uses the same system, but you can try to evade the authorities. As for other policies, the game will have a government and laws that govern the lives of the local residents.
If you love assembling a gang in Baldur's Gate 3, we have good news for you – Starfield will feature over 20 characters who can join the player's team, each with their own biography. Most of the story, though, will revolve around four companions who are part of the Constellation faction. To hire a companion, you would need to pay a one-time fee. You don't need to pay crew members a salary, although the developers experimented with this.

As in Mass Effect, companions will have their own unique set of skills and perks so you can hire a sniper character or an aerodynamics expert who would help in different scenarios. Please note that, unlike the player's character, companions will not level up.
The team shared that time in Starfield progresses only when the game is running so don't expect background activities like resource gathering. You can join several gangs and become a double agent if you get bored – life won't be easy if you want to make different parties happy.

Sadly, Starfield can't be completed entirely in a pacifist playstyle so you will have to kill someone eventually. Personally, I love using charisma and stealth so I hope they can fix that. Still, the developers prepared several perks that allow you to be a pacifist most of the time – for example, there's one called Speech Challenge, which lets you persuade opponents not to fight and resolve conflicts peacefully.
