It features some "hardcore" gameplay mechanics.

Reddit user streetcredinfinite discovered a prototype of a starmap from Starfield. According to the image found, it seems that the developers at Bethesda had plans for different dangers in various star systems, such as solar radiation affecting the ship's hull and the risk of collision with micrometeorites.

The developers also considered adding fuel to the game, as shown by the "fuel consumption" indicator in the screenshot. However, as we have it now, there's no such thing in the game.
Back in October 2022, Todd Howard mentioned that the team decided to abandon certain realistic elements during testing, as they didn't enhance immersion but rather caused irritation for players. So, these elements were dropped from the release version of the game, at least for now. Who knows Bethesda might still add some features in the upcoming updates or its first major DLC.
As for now, Starfield is still Bethesda's worst-rated game on Steam. It has a "mostly negative" status on the platform, with over 39% of negative reviews.
