Some players criticize the DLC's short story and lack of additions to the base game, while others point out the atmospheric and detailed hand-crafted world with improved animations.

Starfield's newest expansion, Shattered Space, was released a few days ago, but the new DLC got reviews that are contrastingly different.
Shattered Space launched on September 30 and, as of writing, has collected more than 1,200 reviews on Steam, which are labeled as mostly negative. Moreover, only 39% of them are positive. Reviews on Metacritic show a different picture: most of them are positive, while the negative reviews constitute approximately one-third of the whole number:
Players share that the expansion doesn't offer many additions to the base game's mechanics and lacks new skills, weapons, and ship parts. The main quest is said to be too short, and some players don't find the DLC's story captivating. The main point of the criticizm can be expressed in a phrase taken from one of the reviews on Metacritic: "The expansion does little to actually push the game experience forward."
Here are also some short reviews from players on Twitter who mention the game's shortcomings:
On the contrary, some fans find Shattered Space enjoyable and note that if you like the base game, you will also have a pleasant gameplay experience while playing the new expansion. The new DLC features a hand-crafted world, which is different from the procedural content of the base game, and some note that it is a positive change: "I'm happy that we are able to get a hand-crafted planet with hand-crafted locations." Also, players note the high level of detail and appealing color palette.
The story in the DLC is called "more grounded," with characters who seem more alive than in the base game. Players also note that facial animations have been largely improved. Apart from this, Shattered Space was proclaimed to "go further with horror tropes than Starfield has done before." Some players also consider it one of the expansion's advantages: "I love the dark storyline and overall mood of this DLC."

Similar to other Bethesda games like Fallout and Skyrim, Starfield has a vast open world and features over 1,000 planets. Recently, Todd Howard discussed the creation of such extensive in-game worlds and explained why they are so "irresponsibly large."
