It helps developers with routine tasks, but there are significant concerns.
A recent study ordered by Google Cloud surveyed 615 game developers from the United States, South Korea, Norway, Finland, and Sweden, most of whom work in large game studios.
The results show that nearly 90% of developers are already utilizing artificial intelligence in their workflows. According to the report, 87% of developers apply AI agents to simplify and automate work processes, noting that the technology helps them save time and reduce repetitive, monotonous tasks.
Many respondents explained that AI tools have already proven helpful in accelerating game testing, assisting with localization, and supporting coding, while also being applied to data processing across various formats, including text, audio, video, and others.
The study also revealed that 94% of developers believe AI will ultimately reduce overall production costs. In comparison, 40% said that the current hype around AI has already led to the creation of new business models in the gaming industry.
At the same time, the adoption of the technology is not without difficulties. A quarter of developers noted that it is still hard to evaluate the effectiveness of AI implementation, and the costs of integrating AI into studio pipelines remain high. Others pointed to a lack of high-quality data for training AI systems and raised concerns over legal risks, as ownership of AI-generated content remains unclearly regulated.
The majority of developers view AI as a powerful tool to enhance efficiency, automate routine tasks, and ultimately make game production more sustainable. You can find more results with numbers here.
